<i>‘Oioi – Oioi – Iehieh!’</i> Democracy in Crisis! Aeschylus’ <i>Persians</i> for Contemporary Stages

This article attempts a reinterpretation of Aeschylus’ Persians as primarily warning about the instability democracy following major military victory against an overpowering totalitarian enemy. It discusses historical and our contemporary ideas democratic principles government versus constant tendency towards strongman regime. I argue that play’s underlying philosophy is based on Heraclitan idea flux, which predates modern relativity time space, core concept underpinning any only thing it continuous change. A short retrospective productions The reveals relationship between history current events can or cannot be associated with play. By treating thorny issue translations adaptations temptations simplistic patriotic antiwar interpretations play, also addresses challenging task determining what constitutes just war why necessarily engaged in defensive battle forces totalitarianism.
